the secret garden

garden
saturday we spent the day at my parents' house eating good food, chatting, and celebrating our mom. we also worked in the garden, getting rid of weeds and sprucing things up a bit. the kids named this the secret garden, so that's how we've always referred to it.
the weather was gorgeous! and it was just fun to get out there with my family and work. this garden was always such a special place for my mom so it was great to do this for her.

mother

today i celebrate my mom. she's a pretty amazing lady.
my beautiful mother
this photo was taken on her wedding day in 1968 when she was 21 years old. it's my all time favorite picture of my mom. and it's one of the only one's that we have of her when she was young. in 1989, we lost our house and all our possessions, including photos and this dress, in a house fire. and i'm so thankful my grandma sent me this picture a few months ago because she knew how much it meant to me.
my mom designed and made her wedding dress herself on the sewing machine my dad bought her the previous christmas. she made most of her clothes growing up and into her young adult years. her gown was fitted on matilda! she's always enjoyed working with her hands, whether making clothes, building houses, or working in her garden.
but on august 29, 2010 my mom suffered a stroke that has left her in a wheelchair and unable to care for herself. it's been a huge adjustment for our whole family because she isn't the same. she still talks fine, but her personality is different and she's just not the independent woman we all knew.
but on this mother's day, i am so very thankful that i can spend it with my mom. because no matter how things have changed over the last year, she's still here. i can still see her, hug her, tell her i love her.
and that makes this mother's day very special :)

i started out my morning with not having to wake up early! that in itself is awesome, but it gets better. matt brought me a hot cup of coffee and then sent isaiah in with a card he made himself and a magazine for me to read in bed. then i got a delicious mimosa (and then another and then another) along with some chocolate truffles as a gift. and then matt started making my breakfast which consisted of strawberries and homemade whipped cream and french toast. it was so yummy!! matt really knows how to make me feel special. all while this was going on, i was listening to lionel richie on my iphone. i love lionel. you all should go ahead and know that now. if he ever comes around here in concert i am totally going. me and a ton of middle aged ladies. anyway, there was another gift that i am going to keep a secret for now. if you follow me on twitter then you may already know what it is, so if you do, then keep quiet! i will show you all tomorrow! it deserves it's own special post.
