bikes and canoes

canoe
the song of the day is still the same as the previous post :)
so in addition to today being our anniversary, yesterday we celebrated matt's birthday. it was a pretty relaxing day of hanging out and playing ping pong. then last night, matt's uncle took all of us out to dinner. i had the sea bass and it was amazing!
i always feel bad that matt kinda gets lost in the shuffle of holidays and celebrations. i mean, on his birthday he secretly booked a hotel on south beach for us tonight! so yes, in a little bit just he and i are going down to miami to eat cuban food and do whatever we want. ahhhhh, it's gonna be glorious.

going to florida to have a good time

windy
song of the day: 'florida time' by bob seger
a cool front literally whipped through yesterday. i was a bit afraid for my skirt. and it's really chilly now! but the sun is still bright and i'm still on vacation so i can't complain.
we had a great christmas! of course the little one got up early because he was sooo excited. we opened up presents and then played with all the new toys. we got a chance to head over to the beach for a bit. there were tons of people even though it was super windy. but for us, it's the novelty of going to the beach on christmas day that makes it fun.
these pictures are from my in-laws' backyard. they live in a really lovely neighborhood and their house backs up to a canal. the boys will go out in the canoe and float around or fish. but yeah, it's a really nice place to visit :)

the lustre of mid-day

havana
song of the day/poem: 'twas the night before christmas'
what a glorious day this was! we slept late and went thrift store shopping with matt's sister and her husband. and to help sustain us in our endeavors, we stopped at this cute little cuban restaurant for some cafe con leche and a cuban sandwich. oh man, it was tasty. they even played some great music outside that kinda made you wanna dance while you ate.
i plan to do more thrifting next week. there's an amazing number of places around here! we got some cool things today, like a small rattan table, a glass, and a couple bowls made in portugal. i bought a great catholic school sweater that i can't wait to wear! and the sales are incredible. most places have 50 percent off deals right now. yeah, pretty amazing.
we also had a wonderful dinner with family tonight for christmas eve. some beef tenderloin, potatoes, veggie casserole, and bread. and any kind of cookie treat you could imagine for dessert. my stars, i'm eating good.
can't wait for christmas day!

all is merry and bright

12-22
song of the day: 'here comes santa claus'
today we went down a bit south to eat at a fun place called 'no name pub'. there are dollar bills everywhere, on the ceiling and lining the walls. apparently, it's like a thing to write something on a dollar and then staple it up to leave your mark. there was an article in the bathroom (funny) that people have left about 65,000 bills! i would have added my own had i any cash on me.
then on the way back to the house we stopped at this little spot. in the background are some ruins of the flagler railroad that at one time linked miami with key west. then a huge hurricane ripped through the area in the mid 1930s and demolished a great deal of the tracks. my father in law loves history like this so he wanted to stop so we could take pictures. then we had key lime pie.
you know, it doesn't feel like christmas. i'm having a blast, but i'm no longer in the holiday spirit. it's kinda sad in a way. hopefully it'll come back soon. i mean, it's almost christmas!!

christmas joys

12-21
song of the day: 'up on the housetop' -my child has been singing this song incessantly!
it was a lot warmer today! woot! not a cloud in the sky and a slight breeze. absolutely gorgeous. i began my day with a run near the water up to one of the bridges and i stopped just to enjoy the view and the serenity of it. makes an early morning run so much more worth it.
then later in the morning we went to a fish market to pick up some fresh seafood for dinner tonight. there was this cool little boardwalk nearby so we went out to take some shots. i was so afraid one of the birds was going to land on my head! but none of that happened and only a few folks thought it strange that matt was out there taking my picture.
then it was back to the house for lunch and some relaxing. i was able to go up to the roof and sunbathe a bit while reading. it was awesome!

from the land where palm trees sway

florida
song of the day: 'mele kalikimaka'
here's some pics of our first day of vacation. starting with a few from the airplane. it was a great trip down here with no delays and no lost luggage! it's a christmas miracle!

we drove down to the keys today to stay for a few days. we stopped at this place where you could feed tarpon, and isaiah had a blast throwing them some little treats. one of the pelicans snuck up on him and stole a little fish right out of his hand! those greedy things.

it's a bit chillier down here than i would truly like. but the view from the house is amazing! and it's so quiet and relaxing. i am so excited to spend the next couple days just hanging out, looking out at the ocean, and eating some delicious food. this is the life :)
